Diary Of A Seducer | An Instrumental Suite

A 2013 eight part movement, named and inspired by the 1843 Søren Kierkegaard novel Diary of a Seducer, had its world premiere May 18th in Los Angeles where it was performed in its entirety by members of S.J. Pettersson’s own chamber group The Krysalis Ensemble and has since had repeated performances in various venues. The Suite is scored for a quartet consisting of flute, clarinet, piano and cello. As readers familiar with Kierkegaard will surely know, the novel is not a typical romantic drama but rather an intense psychological and autobiographical study of Kierkegaard’s own failed love affair with the young and beautiful Regine Olsen. Hence the music is often both contemplative, beautiful and even angry and contains much extra-musical associations drawn from the written text. Although partially recorded, the CD is not yet commercially available.
